Often regarded as a scourge, nettles become man’s best friend during spring.
Nettles make a great post-winter tonic as they are packed with vitamins and minerals and are free for the taking. The young leaves contain minerals such as iron, calcium potassium and vitamins A, B and C. Because of their high iron content and the available vitamin C, nettles are perfect for the anaemic since the vitamin C makes it easier to absorb the iron. Nature knows just what we need!
Nettle tea can be made by picking only the very youngest and smallest leaves (good idea to use gloves) and allow to steep in hot water for 10 minutes. Add lemon and/or honey to taste.
It has been said that to eat three heads of boiled young nettles in springtime will keep you free of disease for the rest of the year! I haven’t tried this, but it can certainly do no harm!
